What it earns its space for

A full-size blender is the only countertop machine that breaks hard things down into liquid at volume: ice, frozen fruit, fibrous greens, and a pitcher of soup at once. The 72-ounce pitcher is the actual feature, because a batch that serves a family in one pass is a different appliance from one that serves one person three times.

What it does not replace

  • A food processor. Dry chopping in a blender ends as paste at the bottom and untouched pieces at the top.
  • A mini chopper for one shallot, which is a rinse-and-dry chore out of all proportion to the task.
  • A stand mixer. Dough is not a blender job at any wattage.
  • A hand blender for blending directly in a hot pot.

How often you have to use it

Two or three uses a week justifies keeping it assembled on the counter. Below that, store the base and the pitcher in a cabinet and treat the counter cost as zero.
