What it earns its space for
A toaster does one job in ninety seconds with no preheat, no fan, and no decision to make, and that is why it is the appliance that survives when the counter gets crowded. Extra-wide or long slots widen what counts as bread, which is the only meaningful specification difference between most models in this class.

- An air fryer oven. Nothing roasts, bakes, or reheats a plate of leftovers in a slot.
- A broiler for open-faced items, which cannot go in a vertical slot at all.
- A range oven for anything with topping, cheese, or thickness beyond a slice.

Daily use is the norm, and daily use justifies a small permanent footprint easily. If bread is not part of your week, this is the first appliance to cut.
