The box an appliance ships in is not the space it occupies. The space it occupies is the outline of its body plus the air the manufacturer requires around it, and that combined rectangle is what has to fit on your counter. This page is about measuring the rectangle you have before you shop for the rectangle you want.

Free run is not total counter
Most kitchens report their counter space as a single number that includes the sink, the cooktop, the drainboard, and the corner where the toaster already lives. None of that is available. The number that decides whether an appliance fits is the free run: an uninterrupted stretch of counter with nothing permanent on it, measured from one obstruction to the next.
Measure it with a tape at counter height, not at eye level. Backsplash tile, an outlet strip mounted under the cabinet, a window sill lip, and the radius where the counter turns a corner all shorten the usable stretch even when the countertop surface itself continues. Write down the shortest honest number you get, because that is the one the appliance has to live inside.
If the run is broken by a sink, treat each side as its own run. Two 14-inch gaps are not a 28-inch space. Nothing that sits on a counter can span a sink, and the counter planner on this site treats a run as one continuous segment for exactly that reason.
- Measure at counter height with a tape, wall to obstruction.
- Subtract anything permanent: sink, cooktop, knife block you will not move, dish rack that has nowhere else to go.
- Record the free run of each segment separately rather than adding them together.
- Note the depth of the counter from the wall to the front edge, because a deep appliance can fit the width and still overhang.

Clearance is occupied space
Countertop appliances that heat air move that air somewhere. Air fryers, air fryer ovens, and toasters exhaust upward and rearward, and every manufacturer publishes a minimum distance to keep clear on the sides, at the back, and above the unit. That distance is not optional decoration around the appliance; it is part of the appliance as far as your counter is concerned.
This site does not publish clearance numbers, and you should be suspicious of any site that does. The required distances differ by model, they differ between a basket fryer and a full oven from the same brand, and the only authoritative source is the manual for the exact model you own or intend to buy. Look for the section usually titled "Important Safeguards" or "Before First Use." If the manual is not in the box, manufacturers publish them as downloads on their support sites.
The practical consequence is arithmetic. Whatever the manual says on each side, add both sides to the body width, and that is the width you need on the counter. Do the same for depth. The footprint diagrams on this site draw the body as a solid outline and the clearance as a dashed halo around it for that reason: the halo is the part people forget to budget for.

Depth beats width under an upper cabinet
A standard American kitchen counter is about two feet deep, and an upper cabinet typically hangs above the back half of it. That geometry punishes deep appliances twice. First, a deep unit pushes forward toward the counter edge, where it is in the way of everything. Second, and more seriously, a deep unit sits under the cabinet rather than in front of it, which puts the cabinet floor directly in the path of hot exhaust.
Width is the dimension people measure, because width is the dimension in the product listing that sounds like it decides the answer. Depth is the dimension that decides whether the appliance can be used where it fits. An appliance that is narrow and deep will slide into a gap on the counter and still be unusable in that gap.
The vertical distance from the counter surface to the underside of the upper cabinet is worth measuring once and writing on a note inside a cabinet door. It rarely changes, it decides which air fryer ovens are even candidates, and it is the number most likely to be missing when you are standing in a store.

Stowable is a real category, and most machines are not in it
An appliance that lives in a cabinet between uses costs zero counter inches, and an appliance that lives on the counter costs its footprint every day of the year whether or not it is used. The honest question is not whether a machine could be put away but whether you will put it away. A four-pound personal blender goes back in a cabinet without a thought. A twenty-six-quart oven does not, and pretending otherwise is how a counter fills up.
Weight, cord bulk, and the number of loose parts decide this more than size does. A machine with a pitcher, a lid, a tamper, and three blade discs generates a small pile that has to be stored together, and the friction of reassembling it is the reason it ends up staying out.
When a machine is genuinely stowable, the counter cost of owning it drops to the cabinet shelf it needs instead. That trade is often the right one, and it is why every appliance page on this site records a stowable flag and a frequency threshold rather than only a size.

A measuring pass that takes ten minutes
Doing this once, on paper, prevents the specific failure where a machine arrives, fits the counter, and cannot be opened because the cabinet is four inches too low. The steps below are the ones the counter planner assumes you have already done, because the planner can only work with numbers you supply.

What this page does not tell you
It does not tell you the clearance for your model, because that number belongs to the manufacturer and varies by unit. It does not tell you whether a particular cabinet material tolerates a particular exhaust temperature. It does not cover built-in or under-cabinet mounted appliances, which are a different problem with their own instructions.
It also does not tell you to put an appliance somewhere the manual forbids. Recessed nooks, closed pantry cabinets, the space directly under a range hood, and the top of a cooktop are not counter space for this purpose, whatever their surface area.

How to measure counter space for a countertop appliance
A ten-minute measuring pass that produces the four numbers a countertop appliance decision needs.
- Find the free run. With a tape at counter height, measure the longest stretch of counter with nothing permanent on it. Stop the measurement at the sink, the cooktop, or the corner radius rather than measuring past them.
- Measure counter depth. Measure from the backsplash to the front edge of the counter. Note anything mounted on the backsplash, such as an outlet strip, that reduces the usable depth.
- Measure to the upper cabinet. Measure vertically from the counter surface to the underside of the upper cabinet above the run. If there is no cabinet above that stretch, write down that fact, because it widens your options considerably.
- Count the outlets on that run. Count the receptacles serving that stretch of counter and note what is already plugged into them. This number feeds the circuit load question, which is a separate page.
- Read the clearance from the manual. For any appliance you are considering, open the manufacturer manual and read the required clearance at the sides, back, and top. Add the side clearances to the body width and the rear clearance to the body depth.
- Compare the two rectangles. Compare the body-plus-clearance rectangle against the free run and the counter depth. If either dimension loses, the appliance does not fit that spot, regardless of how much total counter the kitchen has.
Before you act on any of this
- Clearance distances are model specific. Use the manual for your exact model rather than a number from any website, including this one.
- Do not place a heat-producing countertop appliance in a recessed nook, inside a closed cabinet, on top of a cooktop, or pushed back against a wall to save space unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
- If an appliance only fits by removing the clearance the manufacturer requires, it does not fit.
